<p>Eve Air Mobility this week announced plans to launch eVTOL air services in the UAE and India through a pair of new partnerships launched at the Dubai Airshow. The aircraft manufacturer also confirmed it is working with the UK's NATS to offer urban air traffic management services to support any eVTOL operations worldwide.</p>
<p>Through its new alliance with Hunch Mobility—a joint venture between Hunch Ventures and Blade Air Mobility—Eve is working&nbsp;to bring electric commuter flights to India, starting in the tech-industry hub Bangalore.&nbsp;The companies are working with local, state, and federal officials, and IT technology and service providers to ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place to introduce urban air mobility services.</p>
<p>Bangalore, located in Karnataka state, has an estimated population of more than 13 million people. Eve expects the electric aircraft to significantly reduce the carbon footprint, noise, and cost of flying, making them more accessible to India’s mass audience. Other eVTOL manufacturers, including <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/air-transport/2023-11-13/archer-stakes-claim-evtol-markets-uae-and-india">Archer</a>, have also announced plans to enter the Indian market.</p>
<p>“This collaboration with Eve Air Mobility underscores the commitment to contribute to India’s growth story by addressing the bottleneck of road congestion in the country. We look forward to introducing eVTOL flights that will democratize short-haul air mobility by offering affordable ticket fares and zero carbon emission,” said Amit Dutta, director of Hunch Mobility.</p>
<p>The company’s four-passenger eVTOL, <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-11-07/eve-appoints-suppliers-evtol-aircrafts-flight-deck-actuators-and-thermal">now under development</a>, would fly to a range of 100 kilometers (60 miles) and&nbsp;is expected to enter service in 2026. The aircraft features a lift-plus-cruise configuration with dedicated rotors for vertical flight and fixed wings for cruise flight. Initially, the aircraft will be piloted but longer-term plans call for autonomous operations.</p>
<p>Hunch Mobility has previously signed purchase agreements for 200 of the Eve vehicles. The partnership includes plans for a&nbsp;three-month-long pilot project that will include&nbsp;intra-city helicopter flights in Bangalore.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“This launch city announcement is the next step in a great relationship that Hunch Mobility and Eve have built to co-create the urban air mobility ecosystem in India,” said Johann Bordais, CEO of Eve Air Mobility.&nbsp;“India is an incredibly important market for urban air mobility and our goal is to work with Hunch Mobility to provide residents with an additional efficient and affordable mode of transportation to ease commuting times in one of the most heavily populated cities in the world.”</p>
<h3 class="subheading"><strong>Preparing Dubai For Urban Air Mobility</strong></h3>
<p>Meanwhile, under a letter of intent signed with&nbsp;vertiport developer KookieJar, Eve will&nbsp;support vertiport operations in Dubai with its Urban ATM (air traffic management) system. KookieJar becomes Eve’s tenth Urban ATM customer and fifth vertiport customer and the agreement further marks the introduction of the technology in Dubai. Working with local partner Air Chateau, Sweden-based KookieJar is supporting&nbsp;the development of a vertiport hub facility with eight parking pads and a final approach and takeoff facility at Al Maktoum Airport.</p>
<p>Eve Air Mobility received a letter of intent from vertiport developer KookieJar to support vertiport operations in Dubai with its Urban ATM (air traffic management) system. Sweden-based KookieJar becomes Eve’s tenth Urban ATM customer and fifth vertiport customer. The agreement further marks the entry of Eve’s Urban ATM system into Dubai.</p>
<p>Working with local partner Air Chateau, KookieJar supports the development of a vertiport hub facility with eight parking pads and a final approach and takeoff facility at Al Maktoum Airport. Plans call for a phased implementation program under which networks of vertiports would connect via Eve’s Urban ATM system as urban air mobility operations move toward commercialization in upcoming years.</p>
<p>“Urban air mobility relies on infrastructure within the lower airspace as well as accessible takeoff and landing spots—vertiports,” said Rob Weaver, Urban ATM global business development lead at Eve Air Mobility. “Eve’s Urban ATM solution provides an integrated suite of software that will enable an efficient and predictable eVTOL ecosystem.”</p>
<p>Eve works with Atech, Embraer’s air traffic control technology and system company, to support the development of the Urban ATM software.</p>
<p>KookieJar is collaborating&nbsp;with stakeholders in Dubai to map out eVTOL routes within existing VFR corridors that helicopters use today with the goal of introducing operations seamlessly. The initiative involves collaboration with regulators, customers, air navigation service providers, fleet operators, airports, vertiport developers, and other stakeholders.</p>
<p>Other eVTOL aircraft developers including <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-10-17/abu-dhabi-launches-evtol-air-taxi-plan-through-alliance-archer-aviationhttps://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-11-08/archer-plans-bring-evtol-air-taxi-services-india">Archer </a>and <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-11-13/middle-east-aircraft-dealer-orders-10-lilium-jets-dubai-airshow">Lilium</a> are also seeking to get a foothold in Gulf region states.</p>

Eve Launches Urban Air Mobility Partnerships in Dubai and India

<p><span><span><span>Eve Air Mobility this week named three key suppliers for its four-passenger eVTOL aircraft. In an announcement on November 6, the company said it will use Garmin’s G3000 integrated flight deck for the vehicle’s avionics suite. Liebherr-Aerospace will supply flight control actuators and Intergalactic will provide the thermal management system.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>On November 7, Eve announced results for the third quarter of 2023, during which it had a&nbsp;net loss of $31.2 million compared with $36.7 million in the same period last year. Setting aside non-recurring warrant-related expenses associated with Eve’s PIPE investments for its New York Stock Exchange flotation and merger with Zanite Acquisition in May 2022, the net loss for the period ending on September 30 was $19.3 million.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>During the third quarter, Eve spent $22.4 million as research and development work for its eVTOL aircraft increased, and through the end of September, the company had spent a total of $70.2 million so far this year, compared with $39.1 million in the first nine months of 2022. The increase in costs was largely driven by spending associated with its master services agreement under which it is jointly developing the new aircraft with Brazilian airframer Embraer,&nbsp;its majority shareholder.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>At the end of the third quarter, Eve held cash, cash equivalents, financial investments, and a loan from Embraer, totaling $256.5 million The company has now received around $11.6 million of the $97.9 million available to it in credit lines issued by Brazil’s National Development Bank that were approved in December 2022.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>The G3000 flight deck features large-format, lightweight, high-resolution glass displays that will be integrated with the Eve aircraft’s vehicle management and flight control systems. This is intended to give pilots easy access through touchscreen controls to the integrated flight management system, the navigation and communications radios, transponders, and audio management system, as well as checklists, charts, synoptics and full-featured maps.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>Liebherr will develop electromechanical actuators for the fly-by-wire flight controls. These will be powered by the aircraft’s electrical system, with an emphasis on the design being readily configured to suit the small airframe and easy to maintain.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>Intergalactic’s thermal management system will maintain an optimal temperature for all equipment, including the batteries and other electrical components. It will also control the temperature in the cabin.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>“Each of our suppliers undergoes a very stringent review that evaluates not only the performance and quality of their product but also their dedication to continuous improvement and customer support and satisfaction,” commented Eve Air Mobility CEO Johann Bordais.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>In July, Eve said that it would build the eVTOL aircraft at <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-07-20/eve-and-embraer-choose-site-evtol-aircraft-production-brazil">a factory at Taubaté in Brazil's São Paulo state</a>, close to Embraer's facilities. The company has started to build its first <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-06-01/eve-steps-ground-tests-preparation-evtol-prototype-assembly">full-scale prototype </a>and expects to start flying this in 2024. It aims to start delivering the aircraft to customers in 2026.</span></span></span></p>

Embraer Services Chief To Take Helm of Eve Air Mobility

<p><span><span>Eve Air Mobility will locate its first eVTOL aircraft production facility in the city of Taubaté, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, the company announced on July 20. Subject to local&nbsp;authorities’ final approval, parent company Embraer will build the plant within its existing plot of land in the city. </span></span></p>
<p><span><span>According to <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-08-04/eve-commits-long-term-investment-urban-air-mobility">the company</a>, the site benefits from a strategic logistical location, offering easy access via two highways and close proximity to a railroad. It also sits close to Embraer’s aircraft manufacturing headquarters in São José dos Campos and where Eve's engineering and human resources teams are based.</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>“When we began our search for a manufacturing location to build our eVTOL, we wanted to reimagine how the aircraft could be built using the latest technology and manufacturing processes, coupled with other aspects such as supply chain and logistics,” said Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve. “Our objective is to offer safe and reliable products and services to the market and be highly competitive in manufacturing efficiency. The team was tasked with the opportunity to design an optimized assembly line that prioritizes safety, quality, efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.”</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>&nbsp;In May 2022,&nbsp;Eve entered a partnership with <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-01/eve-turns-porsche-mass-production-expertise">Porsche Consulting&nbsp;</a>to define Eve’s eVTOL&nbsp;global manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics macro strategy. <p><span><span>Eve submitted the basis for type&nbsp;certification to Brazilian aviation safety regulator ANAC in March and plans to begin building its full-scale prototype for the four-passenger model this year. Program schedules call for Eve to start the f<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-06-01/eve-steps-ground-tests-preparation-evtol-prototype-assembly">light test campaign in 2024</a>, in time, it hopes, to gain type certification in 2026. </span></span></p>

Eve and Embraer Choose Site for eVTOL Aircraft Production in Brazil

<p>Embraer is collaborating with Japanese electric motor manufacturer Nidec to develop&nbsp;propulsion systems for electric aircraft, the companies said on June 18 at the Paris Air Show.&nbsp;The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer and Nidec have agreed to form a joint venture company called Nidec Aerospace to develop a vehicle-agnostic&nbsp;portfolio of products for the aerospace industry, starting with electric motors for eVTOL aircraft.</p>
<p>Nidec has extensive experience manufacturing motors for electric automobiles, appliances, industrial equipment, and power generators, and now the company takes its first big leap into the aerospace industry through its partnership with Embraer.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“We are combining two very strong and powerful engineering [companies] to develop electric motors with high quality, very competitive prices, and scale to fulfill the needs of the entire industry,” Dimas Tomelin, Embraer’s senior v-p of innovation and corporate strategy, said at a media briefing at the airshow.</p>
<p>Eve Air Mobility, an Embraer affiliate company developing a four-passenger eVTOL air taxi, will become Nidec Aerospace's launch customer. During the briefing, Embraer and Nidec representatives revealed a half-scale mockup of the 70-kilowatt engine that will power&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/air-transport/2022-07-17/eve-reveals-evtol-design-and-cabin-mockup">Eve’s eVTOL</a>&nbsp;aircraft.</p>
<p>Eve also announced two additional suppliers for its eVTOL&nbsp;on Sunday at the show. According to Eve, the UK's BAE Systems will provide the battery system for the electric aircraft, while DUC Hélice Propellers will supply its rotors and propellers. France's DUC Hélice Propellers specializes in the design and manufacturing of carbon-composite aircraft components.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Embraer and BAE Systems have collaborated for the past year on potential&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-07-19/embraer-bae-strengthen-plans-use-eves-evtol-defense-applications">defense applications</a>&nbsp;for Eve’s eVTOL, which the company designed to serve the urban air mobility market. BAE Systems also works&nbsp;on energy storage for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-03-31/bae-develop-battery-system-hearts-es-30-hybrid-electric-regional-airliner">Heart Aerospace’s planned ES-30</a>&nbsp;hybrid-electric regional airliner and a hybrid-electric technology demonstrator for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-21/ge-recruits-bae-systems-provide-energy-management-nasas-hybrid-electric">NASA’s Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration</a>&nbsp;project.</p>
<p>“Eve has taken a ‘building blocks’ approach to further enhance the maturity of the technology and its eVTOL,” said Eve&nbsp;v-p of program management and operations Alice Altissimo. “We continue to make very good progress and we are looking forward to working with these new suppliers as we accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable air travel.”</p>

<p>Eve Air Mobility recently collected orders for up to 150 air taxis, bringing its total order backlog for the four-passenger air taxi up to 2,850 vehicles, the company announced on June 20 at the Paris Airshow. According to Eve, this&nbsp;represents the largest and most diversified order book among aircraft manufacturers in the nascent eVTOL industry.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Voar Aviation, a general aviation service provider based in São Paulo, Brazil, signed a letter of intent covering the purchase of 70 Eve eVTOL aircraft, which the company intends to operate in several locations across Brazil.&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-11-10/wideroe-explores-potential-scandinavian-urban-air-mobility-network" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Widerøe Zero</a>, the sustainability division of Norwegian airline Widerøe, has agreed to purchase up to 50 Eve eVTOLs. Eve and Widerøe have worked together since the 2021 United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) when the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the potential for eVTOL operations in Scandinavia. Now the airline has signed a letter of intent in which it has provisionally agreed to buy and operate Eve’s air taxis.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As part of the agreement with Widerøe, Eve will provide comprehensive services to support its eVTOL operations, including&nbsp;pilot training and maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities. Widerøe will also use Eve’s urban air traffic management software, designed to&nbsp;maximize operational efficiency while integrating with other airspace users.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Global aircraft leasing firm Nordic Aviation Capital&nbsp;signed a letter of intent covering the purchase of up to 30 Eve aircraft. According to Eve, the Copenhagen-based aircraft lessor has placed a firm order for 15 aircraft with the option of buying 15 more units that the company will lease to operators.&nbsp;</p>
<p>To further promote its eVTOL aircraft in Europe, Eve has expanded its longstanding&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-06-24/eve-provide-60000-evtol-flight-hours-private-flight-group-blade" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">partnership with Blade Air Mobility</a>. In 2021, Eve agreed to provide Blade with up to 60 eVTOL aircraft through a network of local operators to serve Blade customers in South Florida and the U.S. West Coast. Last year Blade agreed to deploy up to 200 of Eve's eVTOLs in India.&nbsp;Now Blade plans to add Eve’s eVTOL to its European route network, with European operations launching in France.</p>

Embraer Taps Nidec to Build Electric Motors for Eve's eVTOL Air Taxi

Eve's eVTOL Order Book Swells to 2,850 Aircraft

<p><span><span><span>United Airlines has announced plans to launch eVTOL flights in the San Francisco Bay Area, building on a 2022 agreement with <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-08/united-airlines-invests-15-million-eve-signs-purchase-deal-200-evtol">Eve Air Mobility</a> to purchase up to 200 of its four-passenger aircraft. On June 14, the companies said they are now working with city and state officials, as well as infrastructure providers, to prepare an air taxi network right in the backyard of two of Eve’s rivals, Joby and Archer, which are developing similar aircraft in Silicon Valley.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>This week’s announcement did not specify locations for the flights in Eve’s all-electric vehicle, which will have a range of around 60 miles, although United has indicated it wants to provide direct connections to its hub airports. The manufacturer, which is backed by Brazilian airframer Embraer, expects to complete type certification in 2026. </span></span></span></p>
<h3 class="subheading"><span><span><span><strong>United Backs Two eVTOL Horses: Eve and Archer</strong></span></span></span></h3>
<p><span><span><span>Last year, United invested $15 million in Eve. The major carrier also holds provisional orders for up to 200 of <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-08-11/united-airlines-places-10-million-down-payment-archer-evtol-air-taxis">Archer’s Midnight eVTOL</a> vehicles and has announced plans with that company to launch services in New York and <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2023-03-23/archer-and-united-airlines-reveal-first-air-taxi-route-chicago">Chicago</a>.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>“Urban air mobility has the potential to revolutionize how United customers work, live, and travel,” said Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures. “Eve’s proposed route is a critical first step towards making this all-electric and quiet commute a reality for Bay Area residents.”</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>According to Eve, the planned air taxi services will lead to significant recruitment of pilots and aircraft service technicians. The company says operators will benefit from the global product and customer support capability of Embraer, which makes airliners and business jets.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span><span>“Our shared goal is to provide residents and visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area with efficient and cost-competitive transportation in one of the most densely populated urban areas in the U.S.,” said Eve’s co-CEO, Andre Stein. “The Bay Area is perfect for eVTOL flights, given its size, traffic, focus on sustainability, innovation, and commitment to add other options for mobility.”</span></span></span></p>


United Airlines and Eve Plan eVTOL Air Taxi Services in San Francisco

<p>Eve Air Mobility is now selecting “main equipment” suppliers and during the second half of this year will begin assembling the first full-scale prototype of its eVTOL aircraft, according to Eve co-CEO Andre Stein. Speaking to reporters during a briefing held by parent company&nbsp;Embraer in Portugal on May 26, he said that recent ground tests of propulsion systems and wind tunnel testing have also helped move the program forward.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“Eve Air Mobility is not just about routes, solutions, or infrastructure,” Stein said, “it's about the evolution of mobility as the key to making life more fluid and cities friendlier. This is the first project to graduate from EmbraerX,” he added, referring to the airframe manufacturer’s innovation hub.</p>
<p>Having submitted the basis for type&nbsp;certification to Brazilian aviation safety regulator ANAC in March, Eve plans to build its full-scale prototype in the second half of 2023, to be ready to start a&nbsp;flight test campaign in 2024 that it hopes will lead to certification and entry into service in 2026. ANAC will be the primary certification organization, Stein said, and Eve will seek FAA validation of the design, hopefully simultaneously as Embraer did with its E2 airliner.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the c<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-07-17/eve-reveals-new-evtol-design-and-cabin-mockup">abin mockup of the Eve eVTOL </a>is making the rounds of events, with its first showing this year at the SXSW show in Austin, Texas, in March. Eve’s first appearance after becoming a publicly-traded company takes place at the Paris Airshow June 19-25, where the mockup and a virtual reality simulation of an eVTOL flight will be on display at the Eve/Embraer pavilion.</p>

<p>Embraer is the majority stockholder and it is closely involved in the development of the all-electric vehicle. Eve, which now employs around 300 people, can call on support from a 3,500-strong engineering team at its parent company.&nbsp;“We see that as an advantage,” Stein said. “We can flex that up and down. We don’t always need the same expert at the same time.”</p>
<p>Eve is aiming to garner a chunk of what it and its many rivals project&nbsp;to be a huge market for advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft, estimated at three-quarters of a trillion dollars by 2040. So far Eve has signed letters of intent for 2,770 Eve vehicles from 26 prospective operators that include <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-08/united-airlines-invests-15-million-eve-signs-purchase-deal-200-evtol">airlines</a>, technology companies, and lessors, including <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-12-08/brazilian-start-flybis-orders-40-eve-evtol-aircraft">Brazil's FlyBIS</a>. “This gives us confidence there is an actual market behind it,” Stein said.&nbsp;</p>
<h3 class="subheading"><strong>Eve Expands eVTOL Ground Testing</strong></h3>
<p>The recent testing involved measuring aerodynamic performance and sound properties of propellers on a test rig, with the aim to maximize efficiency, lower the sound footprint, and reduce operating costs. Eve also began testing vertical-lift rotors on a truck-mounted mobile testbed at Embraer’s facility at Brazil’s Gavião Peixoto Airport, to evaluate rotor performance during the transition phase of flight.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“This allows us to understand the sound profile,” he said. “It’s not only about decibels, it’s the profile.” He explained that engineers were able to test various propeller shapes on the rig and to gather visual data showing the sound profile during various phases including the transition between hover and cruise. This testing along with computational fluid dynamics calculations will help Eve refine the fidelity of its flight simulator and fly-by-wire flight controls, according to the company. “We have been doing rig tests, and we have been flying the engineering simulator for a while to develop the fly-by-wire controls,” he said. “There are lots of tests and building blocks. We don’t fly things just for the sake of it.”</p>
<p>Unlike some competing eVTOL designs, Eve engineers say they have selected a simpler lift-and-cruise design, where eight vertical-oriented propulsion units enable vertical takeoff and landing, while two rear-mounted units power the vehicle in forward flight, aided by the lift generated by Eve’s wings. The lifting rotors switch off for forward flight. This eliminates the need for a tilting mechanism for the wing or propulsion units, which adds weight and complexity.</p>
<p>“Aircraft have been tube and wing [configurations] for more than century,” Stein said. “With electric designs, we can think about distributed propulsion.”</p>

<p>Eve’s initial 60-mile (100-km) range, based on the current limits of battery technology,&nbsp;is designed to fulfill 99 percent of urban air mobility trips, and it will initially carry a pilot and four passengers. Eventually, if fully-autonomous flight without a pilot on board becomes possible through regulatory changes,&nbsp;Eve will accommodate six passengers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>With its noise footprint up to 90 percent lower and operating cost six times lower than an equivalent helicopter, the Eve eVTOL promises to be “community friendly” and suitable for cross-town, airport-shuttle, and sightseeing flights as well as serving areas where roads are impassable or nonexistent, according to Stein. Eve isn’t directly targeting the defense market, although Embraer could explore that in partnership with BAE Systems. “It’s a very different thing to be successful in that market,” Stein said.</p>
<p>As it refines the design of the eVTOL aircraft and prepares for prototype construction, Eve is selecting suppliers for the aircraft’s components. “We’ve been talking to them for years,” he said.</p>
<p>Likewise, Eve has “been engaged with regulators since the beginning [of the program],” Stein said. “Safety comes first. We’re deeply engaged with [Brazil’s] ANAC, and we have regular conversations with the FAA. Our engagement with ANAC is very positive and we have their undivided attention. We’re not fighting with other aircraft developers in Brazil. We believe we are in a good pace with the regulatory authorities.”</p>
<h3 class="subheading"><strong>Certification By 2026 Could be a Challenge</strong></h3>
<p>Stein admits that it will be a challenge to certify the Eve eVTOL in 2026, particularly considering a typical Embraer aircraft program takes six to seven years from conception. However, he said, “We started with the date we believe is most possible.” He noted that many other eVTOL programs have moved their certification schedules “to the right.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Plans for production of the Eve eVTOL aircraft call for manufacturing “first in Brazil,” he said. “A future facility could be elsewhere.” Maximum initial capacity would be 500 aircraft per year, and the aircraft would have to be shipped to their destination in containers, more like long-distance helicopter deliveries than airplanes that can be flown to the buyer location.</p>
<p>As for buyers’ flight operations, Stein said, “We are engaged with our customers in understanding what the limitations are going to be.” There are no plans for fly under instrument flight rules, for example, and in cities where customers plan to operate their aircraft, there are plenty of days where flying under visual flight rules (VFR) is sufficient. Embraer worked with MIT on a tool to model these flying networks, and, he said, “There is enough of a market VFR.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Eve announced that it has completed its urban air traffic management (ATM) prototype, which “focuses on concepts and services essential to supporting the introduction and scaleability of urban air mobility operations.” This means that Eve can now begin “commercial product development of urban ATM solutions to ensure UAM’s airspace integration is successful.”</p>
<p>Eve has tested the urban air traffic management prototype, most recently late last year during its Chicago simulation experience using helicopters as a substitute for eVTOL aircraft. It wasn’t just flights that replicated the eVTOL experience but ground services, infrastructure and equipment requirements, and the passengers’ end-to-end journeys.&nbsp;</p>
<p>One key difference between helicopters and eVTOLS, Stein explained, is that eVTOLs “bring different benefits, they don’t do everything a helicopter does. Because they’re so disruptive with lower costs, they need to be seen as a different operation. That’s why we’re doing so much with conops [concepts of operation], to work together with [local communities and authorities].”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Helicopter routes, for example, are “very inefficient,” he said, often routed over less populated areas such as rivers because of their noise footprint. “We are so much quieter.”&nbsp;</p>
<p>Electric aircraft should also have a different requirement for reserve power than helicopters or airplanes, Stein said. FAA regulations require a 30-minute fuel reserve for airplanes flying VFR (45 minutes at night) and 20 minutes for helicopters. He expects the FAA to issue special conditions in the next few months that will clarify electric aircraft reserve requirements.</p>
<p>Few eVTOL manufacturers will discuss how much their vehicles will cost to buy and operate, other than comparing costs to helicopters, but Stein did say that he expects an eVTOL ride to cost near the $100 or so that a surface taxi charges to go from New York's JFK Airport to downtown Manhattan. “We can get close to that,” he said, adding, “All these networks are modeled considering the value of time.”</p>
<h3 class="subheading"><strong>The Grownups Are In the Room</strong></h3>
<p>With its background stemming from being part of the Embraer family, Stein believes that <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-08-04/eve-commits-long-term-investment-urban-air-mobility">Eve</a> has a huge head start on the competition to bring an eVTOL to market. “Hell yeah, we do have an advantage,” he said. “We’ve seen big players trying to certify and failing. Having a cohesive group of engineers, access to IT, and tools, it gives us an advantage. Finally, the grownups are in the room. It’s an ambitious timeline,” he admitted, “but we have a much better understanding of the process. Our peers weren’t expecting certification to be so complicated.”</p>
<p>That said, Eve isn’t expecting to hit a switch and suddenly start manufacturing thousands of eVTOLS. “We’re ramping up,” Stein said. “We’re not waiting for a magic battery or magic composite [materials]. We’re doing our math on existing technology.”</p>

Eve Steps Up Ground Tests In Preparation For eVTOL Prototype Assembly

<p><span><span>Ferrovial Airports and Eve Air Mobility have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on infrastructure development for eVTOL operations in the U.S. and Europe. The partnership centers on the companies’ joint interest in the urban air traffic management software developed by Eve to allow for the integration of all airspace users in the urban environment. </span></span></p>
<p><span><span>“As a leading global infrastructure provider and operator, Ferrovial is committed to building and operating safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation infrastructure, which is why we are truly excited to announce our collaboration with Eve,” said Ferrovial Vertiports CEO Kevin Cox. “Ensuring that we are utilizing an agnostic state-of-the-art urban air traffic management system will be key to achieving our goals.”</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>According to the companies, the collaboration reinforces a shared commitment to safely integrating&nbsp;and scaling&nbsp;global urban air mobility operations.</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>“This agreement represents a significant step forward and is a strong validation of Eve’s urban air traffic management service offering,” said Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve Air Mobility. “Eve is much more than an eVTOL manufacturer. We are working with companies like Ferrovial Vertiports to consider how these aircraft will operate safely, efficiently, and in the most responsible way possible.”</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>The agreement advances Ferrovial’s positioning in the urban air mobility sector as it develops vertiport networks in Europe and the U.S. Texas-based division <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-12-22/airports-group-gears-demand-led-vertiport-development-plans">Ferrovial Vertiports</a> already has begun work with aircraft manufacturers and operators under some 30 nondisclosure agreements covering plans for short-hop, intracity, and subregional connections of 100 miles or more, as well as hub-airport feeder flights.</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>For example, a partnership Ferrovial signed with eVTOL aircraft developer <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-01-28/lilium-enlists-ferrovial-grow-its-air-mobility-network-across-florida">Lilium in January 2021 </a>calls for the companies to develop 10 or more vertiports across Florida starting in 2025.&nbsp;Spain-based Ferrovial group includes Ferrovial Airports, which it formed in 1998. The division now operates 33 airports worldwide, after providing investment and development expertise. Its portfolio includes facilities in the U.S., Australia, and Chile, as well as stakes in four <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-10-28/ferrovial-launches-plan-uk-vertiport-network-vertical-aerospace">UK airports</a>.</span></span></p>

Ferrovial Airports, Eve Agree on Infrastructure Partnerships for eVTOL Aircraft Service in the U.S. and Europe

<p>Brazilian air taxi start-up FlyBIS this week confirmed plans to establish a fleet of Eve Air Mobility's four-passenger eVTOL aircraft. Under a letter of intent signed on December 8, the company agreed to purchase up to 40 of the all-electric vehicles that <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-08-04/eve-commits-long-term-investment-urban-air-mobility">Eve aims </a>to have certified and ready to enter service in 2026.</p>
<p>FlyBIS, based in Caxias do Sul, has plans to build an urban air mobility network in Brazil initially. Once eVTOL operations are up and running there, the company aims to expand its air taxi services into neighboring countries.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“This new collaboration with FlyBIS will enable us to expand the future of air mobility to Southern areas of Brazil and other South American countries,” said Eve’s co-CEO Andre Stein. “This region has several high-traffic tourist areas that will benefit from eVTOL operations, reinforcing our commitment to fostering the urban air mobility market in different regions around the world.”</p>
<p>With the new agreement from FlyBIS, Eve now has an order backlog of up to 2,770 <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-07-17/eve-reveals-new-evtol-design-and-cabin-mockup">eVTOL aircraft</a>—a value of approximately $8 billion—from about two dozen prospective customers. Companies in Eve’s order book include <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-08/united-airlines-invests-15-million-eve-signs-purchase-deal-200-evtol">United Airlines</a>,&nbsp;and the Brazilian private aviation charter operator and fractional ownership group <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-10-04/brazilian-private-aviation-operator-plans-latin-american-air-taxi-network">Avantto</a>. Eve has said it plans to begin delivering aircraft to its customers in 2026. The public company is still majority-owned by Brazilian aerospace group Embraer.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/eve">Eve’s eVTOL</a> is a fully electric, piloted aircraft designed to carry four passengers on short trips of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles). Eventually, the manufacturer&nbsp;aims to switch over to fully autonomous operations, which would free up a seat to allow five passengers to fly in the aircraft.</p>
