Texas-based M1 Support Services has won a tightly-fought competition to become the U.S. Army’s next Initial Entry Rotary-Wing training provider, surpassing close contender Bell Helicopters. M1’s bid centered around the five-seat Robinson R66 light turbine single helicopter.&nbsp;
Under the $10 billion fixed-price arrangement, set to run for up to 26 years, contractor M1 will provide all aircraft, maintenance, simulators, flight and academic instruction, and related support services. Training services delivered through the “indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity” contract will be conducted at Fort Rucker, Alabama, phasing out the ageing Airbus Helicopters twin-engine UH-72 Lakota currently in use.&nbsp;
The contract—part of the Army’s ‘Flight School Next’ initiative—aims to change the way new helicopter pilots are taught, moving to a contractor-owned, contractor-operated solution. This seeks to provide initial training to between 800 and 1,000 Army candidates a year, while consolidating “aviation training functions into a single enterprise framework, replacing multiple contracts with an integrated solution.”&nbsp;
The final contractor decision comes after four key phases of evaluation. M1 formally announced it was pursuing the upcoming training services contract as a prime contractor back in November 2025, confirming the Robinson R66 to be its platform of choice. The fourth and final phase - held in March of this year - also included the AW119T being offered by a Boeing-Leonardo partnership, Lockheed Martin’s R66 proposal, and Bell’s 505 Jet Ranger X bid.&nbsp;
Reflecting on the decision, Robinson Helicopter Company CEO David Smith said that while the company’s small team “supported five different prime teammates in the early stages of this competition…. [it] showed what can be done with a modest budget and a well-executed campaign.” He also estimated that while the Army’s training program is expected to teach “a generation of pilots” – some 20,000 – 40,000 – he also expects to see “international allies [rapidly] switch to the R66.”
Robinson has previously cited the R66 as having the “lowest acquisition price and lowest direct operating cost of any turbine helicopter in its class over the last decade.” The five-seat, single-engine aircraft is manufactured in California. However, in March, close contender Bell stated its belief that it was on course to “deliver the most cost-effective and low-risk solution” for the role with its Bell 505 Jet Ranger X light single.&nbsp;
