A lifelong aviation enthusiast who joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in 2007, Curt came to&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;from the broadcast industry where he was a national science and technology television reporter and producer. He writes on the FBO field, aviation finance, and sustainable aviation and occasionally contributes to&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;sister publication&nbsp;Business Jet Traveler. Curt was a member of the AINtv reporting staff that won the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year award for Best Airshow Daily. That same year, he was a finalist for another AJOYA award. He earned an AJOYA for Best Business Aviation Submission in 2018 and was a finalist in that category in 2021. He received the National Air Transportation Association’s&nbsp; Aviation Journalist Award in 2012 and won a Pegasus Sapphire Business Aviation Award for outstanding journalism in 2021.
Before joining AIN, Curt worked with&nbsp;Consumer Reports’ television division, CRTV, and for several local television news staffs. An honors graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1995. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will once again be available at Las Vegas-area airports for this year’s NBAA-BACE, which opens on Tuesday in Las Vegas.&nbsp;Physical SAF supplies will be present at Henderson Executive Airport (KHND), which will host the annual gathering’s aircraft static display, and at North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT) for operators to refuel their aircraft before departure.
Several of the OEMs bringing display aircraft will fly them to Las Vegas using either physical SAF or via book-and-claim, the process that makes it possible to purchase the environmental attributes of SAF even in locations where it is not present.&nbsp;Those operators using book-and-claim will upload traditional jet fuel at a participating FBO, but will receive credit for buying SAF at an airport where the actual blended SAF is available.
SAF’s environmental benefits come from its circular life cycle, using existing carbon in biomass and the atmosphere as feedstocks. Using SAF is a key part of business aviation’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
“By making SAF available to operators at NBAA-BACE, we’re highlighting the importance of expanding its production, accessibility, and adoption,” explained NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen. “Sustainable aviation is a key element of our industry’s long-term strategy to reduce emissions.”
The use of SAF will be just one facet of the environmental focus at this year's event, which will mark the two-year anniversary of the Climbing Fast&nbsp;advocacy initiative that illustrates business aviation's benefits to society, including its sustainability leadership. Also, the show&nbsp;will feature a two-day Business Aviation Sustainability Summit to highlight recent developments in the industry's journey to reducing its carbon footprint, and NBAA is once again offering an exhibitor sustainability pledge aimed at making this year's show one of the most sustainable among trade shows.
