“The long-awaited recovery in business aviation activity in Europe looks well set in Western Europe,” noted Richard Koe, managing director for Hamburg, Germany-based business aviation research and consulting firm WingX Advance. There were 63,308 business aircraft flights in Europe last month, a year-over-year increase of 1.9 percent that he describes as “narrow because of the continued negative repercussions of the Ukraine crisis,” he added. “Unfortunately this situation will not improve any time soon.”

 


This marks the second consecutive month of flight activity growth, though this year’s trend is still slightly below that of 2013, Wing X noted. The UK and Germany led much of the recovery in growth, assisted by other large markets such as France, Spain and Switzerland. But these increases were “overshadowed by continued decline to the east,” with activity tumbling in the former growth markets of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. Overall, flights between Europe and the CIS fell 23 percent last month.

 


By category, business jet activity rose slightly last month, with the year-to-date trend suggesting that this segment is finally in recovery. Turboprop activity surged last month by 12 percent year-over-year, while business pistons jumped by 20 percent in the same span.
