Chad is the editor of AINalerts, AIN's daily business aviation newsletter, and is also the news editor at AIN Media Group.&nbsp;He has been writing about aviation, with an emphasis on business aviation, since 1994. Chad started his writing career at The Avion,&nbsp;the&nbsp;student newspaper at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, serving as editor-in-chief before graduating with a bachelor's in aeronautical science. After a stint as managing editor at Professional Pilot&nbsp;magazine, he joined&nbsp;AIN in late 1998. Chad holds a commercial pilot certificated with instrument and multi-engine ratings, and he also is a CFI/CFII. He lives and works from his home in Venice, Florida.

The business aviation community came together last week in support of the Corporate Angel Network (CAN), the industry charity that arranges for cancer patients to fly to treatment in empty seats on business aircraft. At this year’s annual NBAA/CAN Soiree, held last Wednesday during the NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla., the silent and live auctions raised $380,000 for the charity. The event was capped by a live performance by rock group Three Dog Night.

Another of the evening’s highlights was a video, produced by CAN and shown at the start of the soiree, that featured six-year-old Malcolm Thornock from Ames, Iowa, who was diagnosed in May last year with stage-four neuroblastoma. Through CAN, Malcolm and his parents have been able to fly routinely for highly specialized treatment from their home in Ames to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

 


Following the conclusion of the video, CAN executive director Dick Koenig brought Malcolm and his mom, Samara, onto the stage. In a moving testimonial, Samara detailed the tremendous effect the assistance from CAN and the business aviation community has made on Malcolm’s treatment and their family’s life, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd.
