Embraer and Boeing signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a joint biofuels research center at a technological park near Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil. Under the partnership, the companies will be “developing and maturing the knowledge and technologies that make it possible to establish a sustainable biofuels chain for aviation.”


The MoU builds on a partnership formed in 2011 between Embraer, Boeing and research foundation Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa of the State of São Paulo that released an action plan last year that indicates the main paths to be taken for developing a sustainable biofuel industry for the aviation sector in Brazil.


The MoU will soon be finalized via a collaboration agreement between the two companies. According to Embraer and Boeing, there are provisions to include other companies and institutions in their biofuel research and development activities. This effort will help the aerospace industry achieve a voluntary commitment to be carbon neutral by 2020 and cut carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2050, compared to the emission levels of 2005.
