<p>Based on a poll of corporate pilots conducted over the last several weeks by Max-Viz of Portland, Ore., the manufacturer of enhanced-vision systems (EVS) has put together a list of the 10 most challenging approaches in America. Scheduled for official release at this month’s NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla., the list includes airports with notoriously difficult approach procedures, all of them in mountainous regions (two of the top-three airports listed are in the Appalachian Mountains, while the rest are all in the West and Alaska). Not surprisingly, Aspen Pitkin County Airport (ASE), the site of a Gulfstream III crash in bad weather in March 2001, topped the list of the 10 toughest approaches. The remaining nine most challenging airports, in order, were Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) in Lewisburg, W. Va.; Ingalls Field (HOT) in Hot Springs, Va.; Juneau Airport (JNU) in Juneau, Alaska; Bermuda Dunes Airport (UDD) in Palm Springs, Calif.; Garfield County Regional Airport (RIL) in Rifle, Colo.; Lindbergh International Airport (SAN) in San Diego; Sun Valley Airport (SUN) in Hailey, Idaho; Telluride Municipal Airport (TEX) in Telluride, Colo.; and Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) in Eagle, Colo. Max-Viz is now in the process of flying approaches to each of the top-10 airports with its forward-looking EVS to help prove the value of the infrared device for flight operations. The company plans to release a free video once the demonstration flights are completed.</p>
